King Cobra
King Cobra, built in 1984 and was the first in the world to be designed from the ground up as a stand-up roller coaster. Other stand-up roller coasters that preceded King Cobra were sit-down models later modified to accommodate stand-up trains. After the ride's manufacturer, TOGO, went out of business in 2001, parts for the ride became more expensive and harder to find. In addition, the ride was losing popularity in recent years. So in April 2002, Paramount Parks decided to dismantle King Cobra and put it up for sale. Trains were sent to Kings Island's "graveyard" located at the old Wild Animal Habitat feeding house area. After the ride wouldn't sell, the decision was made in 2008 to transfer some of the ride including the trains to Kings Dominion to be used as spare parts for the Shockwave coaster.
The Beast
The Beast opened in 1979 and still remains the world's longest wooden coaster. It will probably surpass 50 million riders during the 2014 season.
Son Of Beast
Son of Beast was a record-breaking, wooden roller coaster that
was built in 2000, and was themed as a sequel to one of the park's other
signature attractions, The Beast. In addition to breaking the world record for
speed, Son of Beast was the first wooden hyper-coaster in the world with a
214-foot (65 m) drop and was the only wooden coaster to feature a loop.
Son of Beast is also known for two major, non-fatal accidents. In
2006, damage to the track caused one of the trains to stop abruptly. Another
setback occurred in 2009, when a woman claimed to have suffered a head injury.
The ride was closed indefinitely, and all references to the ride were later
removed from the park. On July 27, 2012, the closure was made permanent, as
Kings Island announced that the roller coaster would be dismantled and removed
from the park.
The Outer Limits-Flight Of Fear
Flight of Fear (previously known as The Outer Limits: Flight of Fear) is an enclosed launched roler coaster at two Cedar Fair parks, Kings Dominion in Virginia and Kings Island. Both Flight of Fear roller coasters first opened in 1996 and were the world's first roller coasters to feature a linear induction motor launch. Flight of Fear has won three awards from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, including one for Major Theme/Amusement Park Ride/Attraction and two for Technology Applied to Amusements. During the 2007 season, the ride was equipped with cameras that recorded video of riders that were available for purchase. The in-car video cameras were removed for the 2008 season. It has an identical layout to Kings Dominion's Flight of Fear, with four inversions.
Top Gun // The Bat
The Bat, formerly called Flight Deck and Top Gun,
is a suspended roller coaster. The ride was known as Top Gun when it opened in
1993. It is the park's second suspended coaster following an earlier prototype
also called The Bat that operated at Kings Island from 1981 to 1983. The
layout is designed to give riders the illusion they are narrowly missing track
supports and other elements while swinging through sharp turns.
The coaster was originally designed to resemble the deck of an
aircraft carrier Subsequently, the roller coaster was named Top Gun when it
opened in 1993. The ride's queue, where guests wait in line, featured music from
the motion picture as well. An aircraft carrier control room exhibit was also a
feature that guests would pass through on their way to the loading platform
above. Access to the control room exhibit was blocked off from the line queue
several years later, some time before Cedar Fair purchased the park in 2006.
Top Gun was renamed Flight Deck in 2008 following the sale of the park to
Cedar Fair two years earlier. The theme music and sign were changed to remove
all references to the movie. Cedar Fair had rights to continue using the Top
Gun movie theme through 2016 but made the decision to remove all Paramount
themes from the park much sooner. On October 29, 2013, the 33rd anniversary of
the announcement of the original Bat, the park announced that Flight Deck would
be renamed The Bat for the 2014 season. The ride was repainted with a new color
scheme of orange track, black cars, and two shades of charcoal for the columns
and structure.
