Suburban Streets 3

NORWOOD

The first 14 cards show Main Street in Norwood. I decided to put up a couple of sets of cards to show how the publisher would have the artist add, or delete, things to the cards they were coloring. The second card is a colored version of the first card but it was decided that it needed another car, so one was drawn in (same for the 3rd & 4th cards in the next row). The fourth card is a colorized version of the third card and it was decided that it needed to have more people walking around to make it more interesting. This was a practice that was done with virtually every card made. I have many cards with a dozen or more variations of the same photo. It is obvious that the center card in the second row has the car to the left drawn in, they didn't even bother to add any color to it.

Prout's Corner

Neither one of the images above are postcards, you might say I am taking "Poetic License" because my name is not very common and to have a "corner" bearing my name was just something I could not ignore. The 1st image is obviously much older than the 2nd present day one. This corner is located on Glenway Ave. at Guerley Road and Cleves Warsaw Pike. In 1928 John Prout (no relation) hired a Charles Hotchkiss & his son to build a large commercial building here. After it had been built Prout was unable to pay them and offered to give them the building but Charles refused trusting that Prout would eventually get the money to pay them. Unfortunately the next year the stock market crashed and John Prout sold the structure to a different investor and moved to Florida. All this caused the Hotchkisses to close their construction business. In later years the Price Hill Civic Club met here until 1994.

HARRISON AVE. EAST

Harrison Ave.East.jpg (274583 bytes)

This card took a bit of detective work but I believe I have it pretty well located. The only sign I was able to read somewhat was the store on the left behind the telephone pole. It appears to be a shoe store owned by one Joseph Fluegemann and was located at 1546 Harrison Ave. This address places the store between Westwood Ave. and Queen City Ave. which is just west of the Western Hills Viaduct. The even number places the store on either the East or the North side of the street which means we are probably looking East on Harrison. I'm sure there is a flaw in my thinking somewhere (there always is) so please correct me if I am wrong.
